Hey Ann,

I do, it was called SkateVisions, and it came out the same year. Turned me on to Agent Orange, which was a great skating soundtrack. That movie introduced me to Lester Kasai, who was a favorite of mine back then as well.

Hope this helps, I know what it's like to lose a treasure.

Do you know the name of the video that is featured in The Rise and Fall that had Agent Orange in it. Had the VHS but the video player ate the tape and am trying to find it on DVD.

The 'movie' version of Dogtown is pretty good, much to my suprise. Perakta was heavily involved and the director does a really good job with the actors. Heath Ledger is amazing as Skip who forms the Z team ... I didn't even realise it was him until about halfway through.

My view of the 1990's scene is from the UK and not really being 'in' it, in one sense. Search Youtube for Tom Penny - he was the best UK born skater and is still pro these days. Also, for a view of how amazing skating has gotten now check out the video "Bag of Suck" from the company Enjoi. That Jerry Hsu is on another planet to the rest of us.

The interesting thing about the 1990's scene is that as a young skater I was really taken with it, but now it's looked back upon as a real low point. 90% of the scene became street and it got very technical with 'sketchy' style. The companies were all over the place as well. Skate industry ppl and pros now talk about it as if they just escaped the scene collapsing and pulled into a more savvy world of skater led companies and big stylish skating with appeal.

it's worth it to watch it to the end, the instant replays are sick as anything

There are some very cool videos in here, I am a little surprised YouTube has all this stuff. It's nostalgic heart-moments like this, like pt. 6 of the Bones Brigade video for you, that are really great to read about; the stories of youth, of impressions garnered & added upon, that stuff makes for a great read. The closest I ever got to really skating was learning how to ollie (then subsequently quitting cos it took so damn long) & playing Tony Hawk's Pro Skater on my friend's Playstation. Now that is a great video game. I don't know much about skateboarding's history (or I didn't, rather, until after reading this stuff), but I do know that watching Bob Burnquist at the '01 X Games was an awesome moment for my 8th grade mind.

[listen to those announcers! they love it!]

Hey Andy,

It was about 1988/89 that I stopped skating. I had broke the same my arm three times, and the last time was a doozy. Compound fracture, which basically finished of what little courage I started with. Nonetheless, it was some of the funnest times I've ever had. I Actually know less about skating in the 90s and 00s than any of the other periods, and was planning on doing Part 3 as a research project, but how much better would it be if someone who was actually apart of that scene and understand the dynamic wrote it (hint, hint ;) ).

As for the Hollywood version of Dogtown, I haven't seen it yet, and remain a bit scared. Perhaps it will be great, but I can't imagine the fiction would add much to the film as it stands. But I may be very wrong, maybe I have to take the plunge.

Hey Jim, didn't know you were a Skate buff. I started when I was around 17 in 1990 and skated right up until last year when I bruised a disc in my neck ... ouch, 6 months of recovery, and that's that.

The era you were just blogging was before I started, but I watched all the vids in retrospect.

The first company vids that blew us away were the H-street vids featuring a very young Danny Way and legend, Matt Hensley. The companies like New Deal and Plan B started on the new street-heavy trick-a-thon format and we ate that up.

Those vids intoduced my to my fave all time punk CD too: "Energy" by Operation Ivy.

What do you think of the fictionalized (that a word?) version of Dogtown compared to the original documentary?
