According to this post, where I found the video, it was 1968. Not certain if that is correct, but it makes sense where the announcer says Mailer is in his career, not so sure about McCluhan.

I will definitely use this show with my graduate students in history of audio visual art and technology in the Sorbonne in Paris.

But am I blind or is the date of this show never mentioned anywhere?

Scott,
I don;t disagree with you entirely, Mailer was very entertaining. But his bravado and search for a moral order did ring half as interesting as McCluhan's tripped out metaphors. I mean his whole idea of nostalgia, the current moment, and the artist is wild. And it almost seemed as if Mailer was arguing to argue, he seemed so aware of his persona, almost to a fault. But, like you, I'm a fan, so I enjoyed it all the more.

What I think I loved most about this clip is McLuhan's kind of agreement or surprise when Mailer would say something, a kind of esoteric "yes," or seemingly Victorian "Ohhh." Those actual choral sound effects were amazing to me, and the fact that Mailer kept saying McLuhan is fascinating but repellant, and I must smash him was quite rewarding as well.

I actually liked the clip as much for the Mailer as for the McLuhan (but then I also sleep with a copy of 'The Waste Land and other Modernist Classics' under my mattress). The only thing that would have made it better would have been if Mailer actually did sock McLuhan in the kisser at the end.

oh. wow. mindblowing doesn't even begin to describe. psychedelic, kaleidoscopic, inward trip as a response to hyper-accelerated environments... this touches the superficiality, tribalism, connected, fractured, surreal nature so succinctly.
