Here is a wild moment in film/TV history via the ever entertaining Classic Television Showbiz blog. The two video clips below are from a 1977 episode of “The Mike Douglas Show,” featuring interviews with Star Wars cast members Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, and Harrison Ford. The film is still in theaters at the time of the interviews, and you can kind of tell by the conversations that it is already gaining a sacred, wondrous space in the popular imagination.

One take away for me is how cool Mark Hamill seems, and what a blowhard Harrison Ford is. To be honest, I have held a deep grudge against Ford ever since Charles Bronson died back in 2003. Why? Well, because I read in the New York Post that when asked about his feelings about the passing of a fellow action star legend and thoughts on Bronson’s career, Ford was quoted as responding with something like the following, “Well, I was never much of an action film fan myself, so I can’t comment too much on his career.” What?! Is that your eulogy for the great Charlie Bronson? Pathetic. Now he may have been misquoted, it was the New York Post mind you, but how can I live with such a paltry, pompous ass quote as a remembrance of the great Charlie Bronson? I’m scarred for life.

Ack!! No!! I have very few silver screen adorations, & my man Harrison is right there at the top! Misquote! Hang the journalist!! No stone left unturned to find this cruel libeler! Harrison I will make your name good again!

Believe me Brad, I feel your pain. I have been wrestling with this quote for five years. But I think this interview right after Star Wars came out confirms Ford’s questionable character. I mean he hooked up with Clarista Flockhart, the flags should have been raised at that point , but after that quote (real or libelous) I have never seen another film by him and I have now decided that Darth Vader is my favorite character in Star Wars. I even got out my original Han Solo action figure from the late 70s and performed ritualistic voodoo in hopes of making him suffer for snubbing the great Bronson.

Ah this distresses me to no end. I stand by my man Harrison to the end. Ms. Flockhart? She’s a catch for a man like him! Have you forgotten Indiana Jones? Have you forgotten The Fugitive? Jim, O Jim! Have you forgotten WITNESS?? This man is captivating, he is daring & as far as I am concerned, the press was out to get him! I must investigate this further.

I like how Mark Hamill comes on the stage acting like a kid in a candy store, while Ford struts out with the air of some kind of neo-supremacist, like he’s the Steve Jobs of acting or something.

Listen, I’m a fan of many a Harrison Ford movie, don’t get me wrong. But I have to draw the line at Charlie Bronson, Harmonica must be defended at all costs.

Well, even in portraying the Hans Solo character, Harrison Ford was a little arrogant on the screen. In fairness to the guy, maybe he’s just well-covered by his own popularity stars when he made that comment. Maybe, at that time, he has nothing to say about the great Charles Bronson but I’m sure the great late CB is one of his inspiration. Why not ask him again any time today?
