Hey Jim, we all loved your talk about WPMu etc. yesterday. I wrote a recap with some thoughts on our teaching and learning site, which you can see at http://macaulay.cuny.edu/it. I would have emailed you but I can't find your address. Thanks again and take care.

Andrea,

I agree entirely, edublogs.org is the model, and has been for a while. Between that service and their latest educampus announcement we have a major source for much of this thinking. Yet, at the same time it's imperative that all of these different spaces begin to work towards something that ultimately gives the user complete freedom to frame their own digital space, which isn't limited to WPMu, rather this is just one application that may make the future of Personal learning Environments that much more apparent.

Like facebook and Orkut, WordPress will also be replaced, especially with the emergence of realities such as Hackety Hack, I think of this as a conceptual move that isn't limited to any one service. Therefore, think through the possibilities of RSS, OPMl, RDF, and the future of how the semantic web can be grafted on these social networks (take MIT's Simile project, for example) is really where much of the energy may fruitfully placed.

If you build it, they will come. Who cares what Facebook is doing? before they came along it was places like Orkut, which have now fallen by the wayside. 5 years from now, facebook will have levelled off or died down.

And edublogs.org is already doing a lot of what is mentioned. I expect if anything further happens to add more social network functionality in an education setting, they'll be the first ones to do it.

I *do* know both Andrew and James looked at the buddyPress code and felt it was too unfinished for them to pick up.
