Reading Cormac McCarthy’s Suttree and loving it. This scene with the wonderfully drawn character Harrogate was pretty insane, almost right out of William Faulkner’s The Hamlet. Read all of page 32, it is just too much fun.

Man, I’ve had this on my shelf for years, but still haven’t read it…

I am about a third of the way through it and I am enjoying it tremendously. It really clicked when I hit this “patch” in the novel —no pun intended 🙂
What struck me about this novel versus Blood Meridian or The Road, this really seems to be the “heir to Faulkner” novel folks refer to with McCarthy and I can see it clearly. Just wonder why they often leave the other great heir Toni Morrison out of the equation. She seems to be even more interesting in some ways cause she takes in some radically different ways, but with that said I am loving this so far—and as Scott Leslie has suggested, I feel I need some serious bourbon while reading it.
It’s the only book of his I haven’t read yet (besides the light Pretty Horses sequelae). Been saving it up.
