Summer of Love: Marvel Comics

While chatting Zach Davis the other day, and he pointed out he took a new tact to parenting with his daughter. No more boring ass kids’ books that pander to everyone’s cheapened sense of narrative, and generally mistake plot with lifeless exercises about talking animals. It’s time to cut through the veil and get some god-damned 70s and 80s Marvel comics for the kids. Enough is enough. And you know what, he couldn’t have been more right about anything in this world.

I mean just look at the poster? What the hell have I been doing for the past five years? And you know what, comics are cheaper than ya think. So, i am gonna focus on The Hulk, Avengers, anything Vision, and Scarlet Witch. And, I’ve been scouring for recommendations, and I like this list of 10 Marvel one-shots from the 80s. Liking the Silver Surfer love. And while I was never a major Thor fan as a kid, I think I could get into some Nordic, viking golden hammer beatings before my kids go to bed.

That’s it, this weekend I get in my car and drive to this comic shop in Richmond—and Tessy, Miles and me are gonna start scouring the boxes together.

So who’s got some specific recommendations for me?

    It’s worth heading up to the Big Apple Convention in NYC. I used to hit this with my brother in law – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Apple_Convention. We’d play a game and see if we could get a full run of a title in the 25 cent boxes. I knocked out most of the Green Lantern, the Maxx and several hundred issues of Batman. He even scored a copy of an $80 Green Arrow title for a quarter.

    The Thor movie hype actually had me digging through my 80’s boxes the other day, so I happy to see a SOL post about Marvel on the Bava.

      Jim,

      Good call on the Big Apple Convention, a perfect excuse to return home. Now when are you going this year? 🙂

  2. Zach Davis says:

    On the other hand, my daughter has been having nightmares somewhat more frequently since I started working through the Avengers with her, so be warned.

    Zach

  3. Mikhail says:

    I can’t tell you how bummed I am that the comic book store that was a 3 min walk from my house closed just a month after we moved in. Ditto for the costume shop and model train and hobby store. This town is going to pot.

  4. Jim Doran says:

    @Mikhail Looks like it’s time to start your own comic/costume/model train/hobby store.

  5. Mikhail says:

    @Jim Doran You got capital?

  6. Mikhail says:

    See if you can find Marvel What If #34. Picked one up at the local Seven Eleven in Ventura, CA. It’s brilliant self-satire. Cover looks like this:

    You guys will love it.

  7. Reverend says:

    @Mikhail,

    To be frank I would love to run an old school theatre right next to your Comicbook/Hobby Shop/Train store, and I would even let Jim Doran be the usher, but he would have to wear a bava blood-stained tux.

  8. Jim Doran says:

    @Mikhail I have capital ideas.
    @Reverend, I’d love the be the undertaker at your theater. I hope I get one of those really long flashlight that uses 8 D batteries.

  9. Reverend says:

    @Jim,

    I’l give you 8 D batteries….

  10. Jim Doran says:

    Awesome, Rev. Bring them to the Big Apple show. 😉

  11. Mikhail says:

    Let me know when this all goes down. It’s a quick ride to NYC so I’m down. I’ll bring the boy and risk traumatizing him forever. He’s just starting to get oriented to Marvel and gets that the Marvel and DC universes are different. We started to get into how they’re different but then it gets tough for a 5yo to really care.

  12. Jim Doran says:

    Rev,

    It’s settled. We are all going. Make it happen.

    Jim

    • Reverend says:

      @Mikhail and @Jim,
      It is happening, wife committed today, so my family and I will be there in October, let’s talk over details. It is the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd this year, right?

  13. Jim Doran says:

    P.S. Is this the last summer of love post? Tomorrow is September 1st, goddamnitall. I’m not ready for it to end.

  14. Reverend says:

    Also Jim,

    Technically I have until September 22nd, and I will use every last drop of the Summer to finish this neglected series up, but 1102Xmas can;t be far behind now either 🙂

  15. Sam Rodgers says:

    Some classic Spider-Man should be obvious. I dig collecting the old Star Trek comics, though that’s cause I’m a trekkie.

    Though not Marvel, you should totally check out Scott Pilgrim (the comics, not the movie, though it was good too) I’m reading it as I write this, actually. haha
