Averaging Flickr Visual Assignment, the new black

Last semester maybe one or two ds106 participants did Timmmmyboy’s Averaging Flickr Concepts assignment, but this semester it seems to be one of the most popular. One of the reason may very well be Tim Owen’s awesome tutorial. Interesting how the assignment bank will in many ways start to reflect those changes of interest and focus over time, very cool. A whole host of folks did the Averaging Flickr Concepts assignment.

I think creating a tutorial for all these assignments would be a cool cool for going at ds106 into the future, and I would love to see more from the good folks out there. I’ll pitch in my part as well. Needless to say, I also did the Averaging Flickr Concepts assignment which forced me to download a trial version of Photoshop—which would be a layup for anyone in ds106. And Tim’s tutorial was brilliant and the assignment was easy. I averaged the keyword blue, and inspired by Lou McGill I tried to do something with the final image as a background—and not having the Photoshop skills she obviously does for cut out complex images I took a silhouette of the recently missing Dr. O’Blivion and made another “Missing Persons” poster.

Oh, bravo, this is very cool. I could see the silhouette being slightly transparent, allowing the texture of the background to show through. I like that you remixed the averaging concepts into yet another visual assignment.

I’d agree that Tim’s tutorial was a huge help in doing this assignment. And as @timmmmyboy mentioned on the twitter in response to my statement on the #ds106radio that the results were a bit on the bland side, perhaps the assignment is more about “process than product.”

    Absolutely!

In working through his tutorial, I was able to get reacquainted with Photoshop and learned how to use a great many functions I’d never new existed. Moreover, as is attested to by the amazing assortment of remixes of the assignment, the Averaged Concept Flickr assignment invites experimentation.

I came up with some intriguing montage/collage images by using 15-20 images instead of 50 and applying different Smart Group effects than “Mean.”

The poster you’ve come up with here with the silhouetted Dr. Oblivion over the “Averaged” background is fantastic.

      Otto,

Yeah, this assignment is at once an exercise and an invitation. An exercise in navigating around PShop, as you said, but also an invitation to do more with it as Lou McGill beautifully demonstrated. I think this exercise was unpopular for just that reason last semester, but between the tutorial and the playing around it became the new black 🙂

I like what you did with this. Maybe especially because blue has been on my mind all day–Kind of Bloop, you know.

The silhouette is a great touch.

  4. Ha, ha! I’m just about to post my averaging flickr assignment and chose blue, red, and yellow as keywords for my pieces. I tweet the assignment a bit as well, the class definitely invites you to find your own way through each process.

And definite shout-out to Timmmmyboy as I’d never used smart objects before even though I’ve been using Photoshop forever. Yet another reason to inhabit ds106, it encourages you move away from your usual pattern of work and experiment.
