Love seeing Andy Rush playing hard in the fediverse. He recently got his own PeerTube instance up and running at AndyTube, now I have to figure out how to subscribe. I was pushed to get my PeerTube upgraded to 7.1 thanks to Taylor Jadin‘s Docker kungfu. I understand why Andy needs a service like FediHost for hosting PeerTube because upgrades are not self-evident like WordPress. I’m totally onboard with Andy’s sense of an alternative space for video storage and streaming as a smaller YouTube alternative (one not laden with the same endless ads and AI content checks) that allows you to capture some of the cultural artifacts you were discussing on your blog, say.
I just found several videos from 10+ years ago at UMW where I was talking with Howard Rheingold and Nada Dabbagh about building their own personal learning environment for teaching and learning with Domains. It’s been a minute.
So I put those up on my bava.tv site to ensure I have a web copy available given my local hardware storage is abysmal. I also do some small streams playing with some retrotech. My idea before my dad died was to play a season of Madden 2001 on the PS1 and build an AI universe around the stats and details of each football game on a weekly basis. Reminiscent of Coover’s Universal Baseball Association, Inc. with the idea of getting lost in the world of the imaginary, a fantasy/nightmare even more complicated by the world of AI. It would be one way to materialize this would be to explore some tools that are designed to reproduce those cultural realities like blog posts, call-in radio, talk shows, memes, imagery, and video playback. That would be more a bavatube affair—a decently produced, regular stream of Madden 2001. The way it’s currently used is more for archiving and experimentation making it a bava.tv thing: just the junk I decide to throw up there without any rhyme or reason.
Thing is, I just love playing with video and streaming. I have so many possible stream setups for the Madden 2001 project it’s dizzying, how to get the Raspberry Pi to stream cleanly to the YOLO Box with clean audio and a second camera all streaming to PeerTube. Once I return to that project and lock it in I’ll do my best to graduate from bava.tv to bavatube 🙂
Always humbled by a Bava shoutout!
There are so many ways of PeerTubing that I’m still grappling with all it can do. I need to make the “Subscribe to AndyTube” more prominent (don’t forget to Like as well). My “channel” can be found here – https://andyrush.fedihost.io/c/personal/videos – with a big ol’ Subscribe button, and because of the beauty that is PeerTube you can subscribe and follow in so many ways. I’m scouring the web to what’s out there, but I’ll likely make a video to try to boil it all down – once I figure it out myself 🙂
So happy to join the AV club with you!
Was thrilled to see you playing with PeerTube and really excited to learn about Fedihost. I am definitely interested in how they make the process easier because that is something we need to do better with Reclaim Cloud for a lot of these fediverse apps given they can be a bear to manage.
One of the many things I like about PeerTube is the streaming functionality, it is quite good with solid live URL that converts live streams to their own URL and archived post is quite slick. The importing YouTube videos was amazing but that has since been broken because YouTube is ever more annoying. I was inspired by you to get my instance from 5X to 7X, so I am feeling the love, I just now need to clean-up my offloading video functionality, and then i am cooking with gas.
