The great George Meadows sent the image below of a book about a cold-blooded killer who lived a double life as a suburban New Jersey family man. Crazy story, from what I could glean, having killed over 100 people during his career as a mob hitman, but the most striking thing about this figure was just how much he looks like Dr. Oblivion, which is deeply unsettling. I really hope the True Crime class Paul Bond and I are teaching this Fall doesn’t take a wrong turn—there is portion of the class dedicated to the mob in the 1970s and 80s. It’s easy to forget just how dark this stuff is until you start reading up on people like the Ice Man, it’s a chilling topic—I hope I am ready for it.

“Reverend” Jim “The Bava” Groom, alias “Snake Pliskin” is a charlatan and a fraud, a self-confessed “used car salesman” clawing his way into the glamour of the education technology keynote circuit via the efforts of his oppressed minions at the University of Mary Washington’s DTLT and beyond. The monster behind educational time-sink ds106 and still recovering from his bid for hipster stardom with “Edupunk”, Jim spends his days using his dwindling credibility to sell cheap webhosting to gullible undergraduates and getting banned from YouTube for gross piracy.

Hello Jim,
What an interesting topic! I’m going to follow this site closely. I bet we share the same taste in music. Do you like Huey Lewis and the News? Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in ’83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. Do you like Phil Collins? I’ve been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn’t understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins’ presence became more apparent. Oh, Excuse me Jim, I think I saw my friend Paul Allen just come in.
Patrick
Patrick,
You’re freaking me out.
Jim
Get his business card, Rev.
That Jersey story reminds me of the awesome movie The Vanishing (Spoorloos 1988).
Bryan
It’s scary shit, that book, any recommendations for True Crime Dr. Goth? We’ll obviously be reading Infocult!
Jim,
I do think you’d like my business card, it’s bone. And the lettering is something called Silian Rail. I think a business card says so much about one. Tell me about your business card Jim.
Patrick
Patrick,
I think I have seen you playing with it on the couch.
Also, you have a beautiful apartment, I’d love to come over and listen to some Huey Lewis and the News, for while you creep me out, we’ll always have the 80s in common.
Hello Jim,
That would be wonderful. Let me know when you can visit – I’ll need to put some fresh papers on the floor. I do prefer the Post’s Style section. By the way, did you know that Whitney Houston’s debut LP, called simply Whitney Houston had 4 number one singles on it?
Patrick
4 #1 SINGLES! That’s really impressive. You didn’t happen to be in Beverly Hills last February 11th? Just wondering.
Hello Jim,
Strange – my DayTimer is blank for that day. I’m sure I was doing nothing out of character. But I see that you are becoming something of a public figure. May I pass on my regimen? Newspaper photos can be so unbecoming. In the morning if my face is a little puffy I’ll put on an ice pack while doing stomach crunches. I can do 1000 now. After I remove the ice pack I use a deep pore cleanser lotionI always use an after shave lotion with little or no alcohol, because alcohol dries your face out and makes you look older. Then moisturizer, then an anti-aging eye balm followed by a final moisturizing protective lotion.
Patrick
Patrick,
You must have one hell fo a sixpack! Looking good is good enough.
