Say what you will hippies, but I owned their LP (was their more than one?), and upon re-watching this video I’m amazed at how prescient it is. I mean it prefigures the whole logic of that other Australian phenomenon The Wiggles a decade earlier.
Can you tell I’m on vacation? I’m just having fun here.
Great choice. I still have a few Hoodoo Gurus albums (Stoneage Romeos, Mars Needs Guitars!, Blow Your Cool!, and Kinky). Even saw them play a couple of shows in the late 80s.
Maybe the Wiggles did borrow from them a bit, but surely you can’t compare the Wiggles to Hoodoo Gurus? That would just be wrong.
Enjoy the vacation.
I was a fan too, at least of this song. But I have to say in retrospect this video is really all about the Wiggles—-maybe it’s an Australian thing.
I had these albums on cassette back in the late 80s/early 90s and played them until they were stretched or otherwise ruined. Last year I found them on vinyl at Zulu Records in Vancouver. Now my kids (6 and 9) ask for the track ‘Mars Needs Guitars’ before bed.
They are also huge Wiggles fans.
Keith,
I don’t know you, but I like you already. Perhaps we can swap cassettes sometime soon, I’m gonna be in Vancouver in less than two weeks. 🙂
While you’re on vacation, Rev, you might try to find an episode of Lidsville, surely Sid and Marty Croft’s druggiest outing, with Charles Nelson Reilly as Horatio Hoodoo, allegedly the inspiration for the Hoodoo Gurus name. You can get the intro on YouTube for sure.
