So we are in week two of the bavatuesdays film festival. I had a blast doing the first show on Black Sunday (1960) with Paul Bond, and I am preparing for round two this Tuesday at 2:30 PM on Hercules in the Haunted World (1961).  You can watch this film on Netflix, or find an even better version on YouTube (thanks Paul Bond!). I finally took time to get the festival site up and running: http://festival./

The site is a basic spaces for aggregating people’s posts (drop off your link in the sidebar), submit via the fuckyeahmariobava tumblr, the hashtag, etc.  You can find more information on ways to submit to the festiva here.

More than anything, though, this class is a space to push myself to blog about Mario Bava, make animated GIFs, think about film, continue to experiment with live streaming video, and to prepare for two classes I’ll be part of over the next six months. That said, this is NOT A COURSE, but rather a festival. So do what you do. Check out Mario Bava’s films if you are so inclined, and don’t sweat the details.

I looked it up, hoping to see Steve Reeves playing Herc (I know him from Hercules Unchained) and instead saw that Christopher Lee plays Lico! This is definitely one for me to check out.

Speaking of Hercules Unchained, which I know from Mystery Science Theater 3000 — just what is your opinion of MST3K? Did you ever get into it in the 90s?

I should be in transit to Indianapolis tomorrow at 2:30. I’ll try to find a rest stop with wifi along the way to see if I can join in, but we can’t count on that working out. Here’s a collection of fuzzy shots I took from Lucas’s book, plus a few screen captures from Youtube:

All the scenes in the book are in black and white, which is an interesting contrast to the section on Black Sunday. As amazing as the visuals are in color, it looks like they’d still be powerful in B&W.

A couple stories, according to Lucas:
Schwarzeneggar saw this movie as a teenager in Austria and it helped inspire him to become a competitive bodybuilder. When he first won the Mr. Universe title, one of the people he beat was Reg Park.
Bava had trouble filming the fight scene between Herc and Lico. Christopher Lee, who is pencil-thin, and Reg Park thought the idea was so ridiculous that they couldn’t stop laughing. Eventually they got it right.

Lucas writes quite a bit about how Bava did the special effects – technical stuff about photography that’s over my head. But he does say that some of it was filmed in Bava’s kitchen. You can kind of see it in the lava scenes in Hades. Also, the boat they used to escape was made of pasta.

  3. Reverend says:

    Paul,

Do you want me to push it back to 9:30 PM? Would that work better? I can push it back to after the greta lives talk, which ends at 8:45 PM. Or, we can pre-record a discussion tonight or tomorrow sometime.

Let me know, so glad you keep giving to this, you are awesome!

  4. Reverend says:

    Alan,

You are gonna see Reg Park, forerunner and mentor to Arnold Schwarzenegger, in this one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reg_Park He’s pretty awesome!

  5. Arg. I’m behind on your schedule, Rev.

  6. Reverend says:
