Deanimator Re-visited, or the Post that just keeps on giving!

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

A while back I posted a link to an online flash game called the De-Animator. A fun, simple game wherein you kill zombies. Pretty straightforward, and a lot of kicks for a Night of the Living Dead fan like me (which, by the way, is freely available as a high res movie here on What has proven so rewarding about this particular post is that it has kind of taken on a life of its own.

Six months ago I got what I believed to be a respectable, if not impressive, high score of 58 (it took me a while to get to such lofty heights). Well, somehow this post has transformed into a stomping ground for some highly skilled video game addicts who continue to blow my mind. A few months ago Anna_Bannanana reported that she had completed stage 12 during here 7th block class (what is a 7th block class?) -impressive Anna. Then, KayZ, over the last two months claimed he had scored over 200 on De-Animator, a herculean feat in my book. I, naturally, asked for photographic evidence, and he soon supplied me with a screen shot featuring a mind blowing 206 high score! Way to go, KayZ!! Today, Timmy noted that he has scored 255! Two Hundred and fifty Five on De-Animator!!!! Get outta town…

We are moving quickly towards off the chart numbers here folks. I don’t think any of you civilians realize the time, energy and skill that goes into such a high score. For now I have linked to KayZ’s screenshot of his 206 highscore above, at least until Timmy gives me a link to his monumental accomplishment. But, in the end, you’re all winners in my book. Having grown up in smoke-filled pool halls a video game junky with games like Pacman, Defender, Joust, Crush Roller, and Asteroids to while away my childhood (without guilt or penance), I fully understand and applaud the feeling of utter and absolute satisfaction at having championed the machine with what may very well turn out to be an ephemeral conquest. For at least a moment, we were all on top of the (our) game. Anna, KayZ, and Timmy, and all those about to game -FIRE!!!- WE SALUTE YOU!!!

I used to be the pinball king at the Penn State Shenango campus in 1984. Meteor was my game – I played for free while I should have been in class. Now, you can be in class and play at the same time – an achievement indeed.

It’s interesting, because as flippant as it may seem on the exterior, this is a pretty brilliant example of how games — even mindless zombie games — create a critical conversation (bitches) that brings people together over a common medium.

(This is my monocle face) O.o I SAY.

I couldn’t resist, though I am a recovering pinball addict who had a brief, intense fling with video games in the early 80’s. Grad school, stacks of quarters, much wonderfulness. Stargate, etc.

So my first time out I got a 58. Woo-hoo! Screenshot on request.

  4. jimgroom says:

Wow, 58 Gardner, please supply the screenshot, please. That is hall of fame for anyone over 12:)

  5. Kayz says:

*laughs* all is fine and well, except Kayz is a girl

  6. Kayz says:

😛 nice to know I’m not the only one who is or was addicted to pinball in here

  7. jimgroom says:

Sorry for my male-centric assumptions:) Hope you can forgive me for that one. Props on the score -now do you think you can beat the newly “reported” high score?!

I’ll be looking for the screenshots…

  8. Kayz says:

*laughs* It’s okay. It’s summer so I’ll probably find a way to beat my high score lol. Just seems to be one of the things that tends to happen when I have too much time on my hands. And of course if I achieve my goal I’ll bring screenshots back for you ^_^

  9. Gardner says:

Kayz, there are days I just don’t ever want to recover from my pinball addiction. Stack those quarters and let’s start flipping.

  10. Kayz says:

Who says you need to? When I don’t have the money, or I can’t spend my money to play on a machine, I have Sonic Spinball and Virtual Pinball to play on my Sega Genesis. Also, for my computer I have a set of games called Pinball Madness 2. Many different games on there, and leaves me with the question, What is the connection between pinball and cows?

  11. Gardner says:

    I’m guessing it’s something about tilting….

Ever play any of the 3D PC pinball games that some company (I forget who) brought out in the 90’s?

  12. Kayz says:

Hm, maybe, I don’t know. Most of my pinball games for my PC are in 3D, but I don’t know any story behind them. I just play them and have fun with it for something to do when I can’t seem to get out of the house.

I am currently stuck at 614, level 30 or something. Judging from the previous posts, this basically means I am Zombie-overlord, God, whatever. I’d be more than happy to furnish a screenshot on request.

  14. jimgroom says:

    Screen shot please 🙂

614 puts us into a whole other paradigm of de-animator -making me wonder whether or not we are ready for a sequel?

  15. Chris says:

I guess I’m an idiot, but how do I upload the screenshot? I don’t see an “attatch” option. (?) Oh, and I was two zombies off– actual score= 612, level 30.

  16. Chris says:

Well, I uploaded my screenshot to photobucket. Check it out here:

  17. Jim says:

You can upload the image to a service like flickr, photobucket or something like that and just copy the link to the image in the comment. If that doesn’t work, send it to It is great to have another uber-gamer representing at bavatuesdays!

  18. Chris says:

Cool, thanks. Assuming you checked out my link above your comment already, yeah, in all humility I had no idea my score was that great. Earlier today I just got curious as to what other peoples scores were, checked the internet and discovered I may be the supreme champion of the world. How lovely for me.

  19. Jim says:

Ahh, you beat me to it -the next post is to celebrate and unbelievable victory -612 :0 -a full-scale salute is in order!
