EdTech Survivalist: Episode 1

“Fishing with Tom”

In our first episode we were ever so lucky to catch up with Dixie’s most impressive edtech survivalist Tom “Catfish” Woodward. We tunneled all the way down to the swamps of Slocum, Alabama to find him, and we were duly rewarded with some invaluable gems about trotlining RSS to feed the entire family fresh knowledge on a daily basis. Bon appetit!

Credits: Special thanks to Catfish for giving so freely of his limited time and unlimited genius. And once again thanks go to Serena Epstein for applying her special touch.

    All y’all a bunch o’ crazy crackers!

  2. Mikhail says:

Ain’t no feed like RSS feed. Yeeeeha!

  3. Michael says:

Okay, okay, I’ll go with that. But answer me this:

What happens when the river runs dry? Watcha gonna do then, Mr. Trout Man??

    Watcha gonna do??

    BTW, amazing work. Simply amazing.

  4. Brian says:

That was wonderfully done! And to answer Michael’s question: Just head down to where the river was and take whatever is still flapping around!

  5. Scott Leslie says:

ok, so it’s not like I don’t have enough problems with the TSA already, and now I also have to explain to the entire Concourse A in SeaTac Airport why I am doubled over laughing hysterically. “Trotlining” – Reverend, you slay me.

  6. We do make a good team even though you cut out my anti-NY comments and spitting.

Imagine if we actually planned something out- or maybe not. I say next time more kids and more random comments. It was a nice way to meet my new neighbors.

    Now what’s the next video?

Twitter as the MRE of online content?

    Blog as Swiss army/survival knife?

Maybe a homemade generator that equates power to intellectual curiosity- how to keep it running, what’s the fuel?

There’s got to be a way to make brewing moonshine into something- maybe that’s the end to a whole process resulting in refined learning.

Most fun I’ve had in a while.

    Thanks,

    Tom

  7. Reverend says:

    Tom,

You were brilliant, working with you is something I truly miss. And I’d film every last one of your ideas if it meant we could work together regularly. It’s not only fun as hell, but it keeps me intellectually stimulated about all these ideas. So, let’s do another one, and let’s do it quick. Hey, maybe we can even plan another programmistan-like presentation. Whatever it takes!

  8. Matt says:

That left me feeling hungry . . . . for some knowledge!

    Which way’s the Piggly Wiggly?

  9. Tom says:

    Jimmy G-

Let’s see if we can figure something out for this week or at the latest this weekend. I’ve got to knock out a lesson by Monday and have a fairly major project due this coming Friday. Maybe we can figure out a way to do it via ichat- make it interview style — something like “from a bunker deep in some deep, deep woods where IT fears to tread.” Reminds me of that line from “Rocky Top”

Once two strangers climbed on rocky top,
    Lookin for a moonshine still.
Strangers aint come back from rocky top,
    Guess they never will.

Which makes me wonder if we don’t need a soundtrack. There are a lot of good country songs that would fit.

    Tom
