“TIme Enough at Last” Minimalist Book Cover

"Time Enough at Last" Minimalist Book Cover

Minimalist Book Cover for Twilight Zon episode “Time Enough at Last”

I am really happy with how this one came out. It was a mashup of things, so let me run you through them quick. I started out thinking about using the iconic symbols in this episode of Twilight Zone, namely the glasses and and the clock, by placing a clock face within each lens.
This was the beginning of the idea. I found the glasses and clock icons on The Noun Project. After that I created a new canvas in Gimp that was roughly 700px high and 490px wide with a transparent background. I imported the two icon SVG files and adjusted there sizes, I made the glasses 300 x 300px and kept the clocks at 100 x 100px. Once i selected and moved each layer aroundI had my design, but I though I needed more, which is when I started searching for rubble as a backdrop. I found this insane image of the aftermath of H-bomb in Hiroshima which is hauntingly similar to both the theme and aesthetic of “TIme Enough at Last,” and I knew I would use it. I added it as a backdrop, put its opacity at 50%, and added the book title text at the top and author name text at the bottom using the Twylyte Zone font, although I think I might even like the Ringbearer font better. After that, I added a new layer with a white background and moved the layer so it was the background for all effects. After that, total awesome–what say you? Does the archival image and iconic glasses work for you? I kind like the serendipitous effect of the glasses sitting neatly on the cupola of the building, so cool!

The Invaders in 4 Icons

4-icon-challenge-invaders

In today’s “Introduction to Design” session Tim Owens and I demonstrated how to approach a few design assignments. One in particular was how you could use The Noun Project and GIMP to do a 4 Icon Challenge. A number of folks already got out the gate quick on this one, such as  Talky Tina, Paul Bond, Arlana McAndrew, and Andrew Thomas. I have to admit, I love this assignment, it is quick, fun, and addictive. I am not alone, and I think without question it has been the most popular assignment outside the GIF, with more than 126 people having registered their work on the assignment page to date. Usually it’s funner to make people guess what movie, tv show, Twilight Zone episode, etc., but given we all have seen “The Invaders” during week 1 I will forego the formalities for this one 🙂

Giffing Anti-Intellectualism in “Time Enough at Last”

The following three GIFs capture one of Rod Serling’s recurrent themes in the Twilight Zone: anti-intellectualism. While “Time Enough at Last” is about many things, I can’t help but read Mrs. Bemis’s sadistic defiling of her husband’s books as anything other than society’s violent reaction to learning as a form of pleasure and beauty. What’s more, it seems all the more relevant that Burgess Meredith also stars in another classic Twilight Zone episode on this topic: “The Obsolete Man” (he was in four episodes all told). Control is a function of shackling the imagination, and reading remains the most liberatory of acts given how little it imposes a third party’s mediated rendering of the world upon our imagination.

ds106zone: Introduction to Design

After some introductory admonishments from yours truly to start the episode, Tim Owens and I sat down to introduce the design portion of ds106 in some detail. We started off the discussion around the idea of what makes an artist, and then got into a brief overview of what elements make up good design as well as demonstrated some favorite design assignments from the assignment repository, such as The 4 Icon Challenge, I Can Read Movies, Children’s Book Cover, and The Big Hip Hop. as well as discussed a few web-based resources like The Noun Project, Dafont, and Kuler to name a few. Hopefully sometime on Thursday Scottlo and I will sit down to have a similar discussion about audio, but be sure to tune into his daily podcasts because he is already tearing the audio assignments up, as this show attests to.

ds106zone week 2: Design, Audio, and Twilight Zone, oh my!

This Week’s Twilight Zone Episodes

twilight-eye1This week you will be required to watch and create around three Twilight Zone episodes: “The Eye of the Beholder,” “The Midnight Sun,” and “Time Enough at Last.”

You can find “Eye of the Beholder” in bits and pieces on YouTube but it might be easier to watch on Hulu here (restricted by country).

You can only find “The Midnight Sun” in clips on YouTube, but it is available in its entirety on Hulu here (restricted by country).

You can find “Time Enough at Last” on YouTube here or Hulu here (restricted by country).

I will have copies of all three accessible on media.umw.edu for watching and download by tomorrow.

Creative Commons

Start the week off by learning a bit about (or a bit more about) the Creative Commons (CC) movement and how it relates to our notion of copyright and intellectual property. It’s up to you this week to do the research on this topic! Use the power of the Web to learn more about CC and copyright — don’t worry there are TONS of materials online about this topic. We’d like to see what you find and come up with on your own.

When you’re done, write up a blog post in which you share your research findings — what exactly isCreative Commons? In addition, let us know what Creative Commons resources you found most useful and informative. Finally, share your thoughts about how you’ll be licensing your work for this class from here on out — and let us know why you made this choice. Tag this post ds106CC.

DailyCreate

You must do at least four of the possible seven assignments on the day the assignment is published. It must be posted Flickr with the proper tags and then tweeted with the title and the hashtags #ds106zone, #dailycreate, and the tag for that day, namely #tdc504, #tdc505, etc. Make sure your flickr images and tweets are tagged correctly so I can see them and you can get credit.

This Week’s Design Assignments
Complete at least 15 stars of Design assignments—keep in mind you can substitue up to two animated GIF assignment for a design assignment. You can find the design assignments here, and the animated GIF assignments here. The only condition is at least 8 of those fifteen stars must be based on one or more of the three Twilight Zone episodes that are required viewing this week. Also, you can’t do any design assignment you already did in week 1. One of the design assignments we recommend is the DS106 Design Review, which will give you a sense of some of the best design work in ds106 over the past three years.

As with last week, each assignment must be blogged! Don’t forget to review  Alan’s tips of how to write-up assignments like a pro.

Feel free to submit new assignments as you feel compelled, you have to submit and document at least two assignments before the end of the 5-week session. A few pointers for design will be provided in tomorrow’s live session at 2 PM EDT which you can find at http://ds106.tv. Before hand, however, check out Tim Owens ” We Are All Artists” as well as the list of sites below that he refers to in his talk.

Links

Additionally, review this assignment document put together for last year’s summer session of #ds105 and spend some time reviewing the design concepts and the linked resources. The goal here is for you to develop a deeper, more nuanced understanding of the basic elements of design. For our purposes,  the following major design elements have been identified  for further investigation this week:

  • color
  • typography
  • metaphors/symbols
  • minimalism & use of space
  • form/function/message
  • balance
  • rhythm
  • proportion
  • dominance
  • unity

After reading and reviewing the assignment document, you should be able to provide a basic explanation of each of these concepts.

To reinforce your understanding, you need to understake a “Design Safari”: Carry your camera with you this week and take photos of objects, ads, signs, etc. that illustrate one of these concepts. At a minimum, provide examples of four of the concepts. Share all your photos on Flickr and tag themdesignblitz.  In addition, add a link to your Flickr photos in the assignment document within the proper concept areas, under the heading “Found Examples.” These are in additoin to your Daily Creates!

When you have completed your Safari, write a blog post that includes (THAT MEANS EMBED!) the photos and your analysis of the design elements and what makes them effective or not. (You can do this in one single post if you like, or in several.)

(PRO TIP: Sometimes we can learn just as much from badly designed things as we can from well-designed things!)

Audio Assignments

Despite what Scottlo says, the Scottlo podcast is required listening daily throughout the course (he’s trying to undermine my authority and will pay dearly for that). What’s more, he will be demonstrating audio assignments throughout the week on the LoDown Cast as well as giving you pro tips along along the way. The man is a genius of audio, tune in, take notes, and ask questions. What’s more, tomorrow is the last day for students to drop, once I figure out who is staying or going in terms of registered, for-credit students I will form you all into radio groups so that you can get going on the half-hour radio shows you’ll be creating during week three.

If time allows, Scottlo and I will have a live session this Thursday on ds106radio to talk through the audio assignments, the details of the radio shows, and more. In the mean time, you are required to do 15 stars of audio assignments  which you can find here, and at least eight stars worth have to be somehow based on at least one of the three Twilight Zone episodes you are required to watch this week.

Scottlo has already recommended downloading Audacity for these assignments (a robust, open source audio editing software) and I will reinforce that here. Most of the assignments are geared towards you gettign familiar with the basics of audio editing, there are a ton of tutorials out there for using Audacity, but Andy Rush’s overview of all things Digital Audio is a real good overview of the landscape. What’s more Andy Rush also has a great tutorial for helping you get the MP3 export function working in Audacity, which can be a pain for some.

The Invaders now available for Atari 2600

atari-2600-invaders

I have a new assignment I’ll post to the repository sometime later, but for now I’m going to give it a preliminary star count of 4 and a half because that’s how many I need right now 🙂 I’ll also post a tutorial shortly, but for the moment this is an old school Atari 2600 cartridge cover—you can find the template here—that I used a 1950s scifi movie poster of Earth vs. the Flying Saucer (1956) to capture an aestheticized version of the Twilight Zone episode “The Invaders.” I got the correct font for the game title from the Atari Age site. Finally, I grabbed the Minimalistic Book Cover for The Invaders Andy Forgrave created to capture the gameplay screenshot on the back cover (it was Andrew’s assignment that inspired this madness). I did this under time-imposed duress, but I’m still happy with how it came out. What’s more, there were so many freely available—and awesome— resources to pull this bad boy together quickly, and it was so much fun, more a design-based mashup than anything else.

Creeping on The Invaders

creeping_on_invaders

To round out my Visual Assignments for the week, here is a younger me creeping on “The Invaders” inspired by the Creep on the Movie Scene assignment by Jack Mulrey, an old gold #ds106er . I always liked the idea of editing myself into a scene, and what better to be there when the “alien” shows himself to the giant.

This was a pretty easy edit in GIMP. I took a screenshot of the still I wanted to creep on and then found an image of myself that could potentially fit. After that, I opened both as layers and then moved the image of me in the lower-left hand corner and traced out the profile with the free select tools (the lasso icon) and then cut myself out and pasted it into a new layer. I then deleted the old layer I just cut myself out from and then selected the layer containing just my image and used the Colors–>Colorize menu selection and messed with the Hue, Saturation, and Brightness settings to match the scene. After that I export it as a JPG and I am officially creeping!

Make it Stop in Stereo

Invaders Stereoscopy

One of my favorite scenes in the Twilight Zone episode “The Invaders” is when Agnes Moorehead freaks out at the high pitched noise from the flying saucer.  I played on this scene a bit in my with my comic effect assignment “Make it stop.”  I figured I would experiment with this using the “Wiggle Stereoscopy” assignment. The cool thing about this assignment is it’s two shots animated that really give the illusion of three dimensions. So neat! What’s more, it’s a fairly easy process once you know how to make a GIF. Just pick two shots and have them animate alternatively.

Trolling TV SciFi: the truth is out there?

tripple_troll_ds106zone

Above is an instance of one of my all-time favorite ds106 assignments, triple troll quotesI grabbed this image of Serling with the trippy Twilight Zone background and then added the quote and the author text in GIMP. The one thing that was tricky is getting text to show up against that background, so I added the white text, then selected the image layer and selected around the text and airbrushed it black so it could be easily read. That’s it, and I love it!

Two stars (21 in the bag!)

Make it stop!

Because I love Scottlo!

invaders_scottlo_rif

We all know nothing could be further from the truth given the cool, mellifluous tones of the great Scottlo, but I want to poke fun. This is the Comic Book Effect assignment, which is pretty straightforward. I took a screenshot from the Twilight Zone episode “The Invaders” and brought it into GIMP and added the Filters–>Artistic–>Cartoon effect twice. After that a selected an area on the image with the selection tool, then airbrushed it in white. FInally, I added the text in black and that’s all she wrote.

1 star which makes 19.
