Testimonials:
Generations from now, they won't call it the Internet anymore. They'll just say, "I logged on to the Jim Groom this morning.
-Joe McMahon
Everything Jim Groom touches is gold. He's like King Midas, but with the Internet.
-Serena Epstein
My understanding is that an essential requirement of the internet is to do whatever Jim Groom asks of you while you're online.
-James D. Calder
@jimgroom is the Billy Martin of edtech.
-Luke Waltzer
My 3yr old son is VERY intrigued by @jimgroom's avatar. "Is he a superhero?" "Well, yes, son, to many he is."
-Clint Lalonde
Jim Groom is a fiery man.
-Antonella Dalla Torre
“Reverend” Jim “The Bava” Groom, alias “Snake Pliskin” is a charlatan and a fraud, a self-confessed “used car salesman” clawing his way into the glamour of the education technology keynote circuit via the efforts of his oppressed minions at the University of Mary Washington’s DTLT and beyond. The monster behind educational time-sink ds106 and still recovering from his bid for hipster stardom with “Edupunk”, Jim spends his days using his dwindling credibility to sell cheap webhosting to gullible undergraduates and getting banned from YouTube for gross piracy.
I am Jim Groom

5 Years of Shenandoah Online
One of the projects I started working on more than five years ago was bringing the Shenandoah Literary Magazine online. I got the gig thanks to the late and very great Claudia Emerson, who I had been working with on a literary journals class … Continue reading
In Memory of a Poet
It’s a sad day. I got the news earlier today that one of the very best people I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with has died. I knew Claudia Emerson as a brilliant teacher both inside and outside the … Continue reading
Claudia Emerson on the “poetics of preservation”
We had our first DTLT Today episode (#33!) that actually featured a UMW faculty, and we were fortunate to get none other than Claudia Emerson, who is not only an amazing poet, but also as cool as they come. She … Continue reading
Young Gun for Hire: A DTLT Graduate
In less than a week’s time Serena Epstein will be graduating from UMW, and will therefore no longer be working for the Division of Teaching and Learning Technologies. And even though we fight like cats and dogs, it pains me … Continue reading
Disco! UMW’s Bullet now on UMW Blogs
You can’t keep the best damn educational blogging platform from Timbuktu to Portland Maine (or Portland Oregon, for that matter) down, and here’s the proof: UMW’s student-run newspaper The Bullet is now running it’s web-based version on UMW Blogs! (Notice … Continue reading

Blog…You keep saying that word, but I don’t think it means what you think it means
Forgive me for the re-publishing, but I just wanted to bring my page from the ELI 2009 presentation into the bava in an ongoing effort to build my personal brand and leverage my innumerable distributed online efficiencies and sweat equity … Continue reading
Publishing: This Time it’s Personal!
Image photoshopped by Serena Epstein. The NMC’s 2009 Horizon Report lists “The Personal Web” as one of the developing trends for educational institutions over the next 2 to 3 years. They define it as follows: Part of a trend that … Continue reading
Claudia Emerson: Poet Laureate of Virginia
It’s been hectic on the Mary Washington campus these last few days, and in all the hustle and bustle of classes starting up a pretty honor for one of our faculty was announced. Professor Claudia Emerson was named the poet … Continue reading
