Generations from now, they won't call it the Internet anymore. They'll just say, "I logged on to the Jim Groom this morning.
-Joe McMahon
Everything Jim Groom touches is gold. He's like King Midas, but with the Internet.
-Serena Epstein
My understanding is that an essential requirement of the internet is to do whatever Jim Groom asks of you while you're online.
-James D. Calder
@jimgroom is the Billy Martin of edtech.
-Luke Waltzer
My 3yr old son is VERY intrigued by @jimgroom's avatar. "Is he a superhero?" "Well, yes, son, to many he is."
-Clint Lalonde
Jim Groom is a fiery man.
-Antonella Dalla Torre
“Reverend” Jim “The Bava” Groom, alias “Snake Pliskin” is a charlatan and a fraud, a self-confessed “used car salesman” clawing his way into the glamour of the education technology keynote circuit via the efforts of his oppressed minions at the University of Mary Washington’s DTLT and beyond. The monster behind educational time-sink ds106 and still recovering from his bid for hipster stardom with “Edupunk”, Jim spends his days using his dwindling credibility to sell cheap webhosting to gullible undergraduates and getting banned from YouTube for gross piracy.
I am Jim Groom

When Garfield dies, people read!
Here is a wild example of how writing out in the open can lead to crazy things, like, for example, being read by a whole lot of people. This past weekend I read this post about an existential Garfield strip … Continue reading
Playing with BuddyPress
For the last 12 hours or so I have been playing pretty heavily with BuddyPress, which is basically a series of powerful plugins developed by Andy Peatling that creates a social networking layer for WordPress Multi-User. I had played with … Continue reading
Katabasis and “Choose Your Own Adventure” narratives
Image Credit: “Odysseus” by paral_lax It’s funny how things work online, soon after reading Alec Couros’s post “‘Choose You Own Adventure’ comes to YouTube” (which is such a brilliant use of YouTube annotations for digital storytelling), I got a message … Continue reading
Aggregating Google Calendars
One of the biggest complaints on campus right now is that many of us really don’t know what is going on. I don’t mean this in an abstract way, but quite literally what events are happening at what time and … Continue reading
UMW Blogs: It’s official?!
Well, after almost a year and a half of solid publishing and more than 30,000 posts, UMW Blogs has finally got frontpage link real estate on the UMW Homepage. I guess we’re kind of official, now if we could just … Continue reading
A domain of one’s own
It was recently announced by Mary Washington’s new president that the next academic year (2009/2010) will be “The Year of the Digital Campus” at UMW. While I think we are uniquely positioned to make the most of this idea, I … Continue reading
UMW Blogs is breaking down the walls!
I have been remiss on my UMW Blogs postings lately, I have been too absorbed with flaming conference attendees (not to mention email lists) that I have lost my center, my home, my love! But, like any good companion, as … Continue reading
Clubs and Organizations on UMW Blogs
One of the most interesting elements of UMW Blogs is the way in which things kinda happen on their own accord, and the publishing environment takes on a life of its own. For example, I track a lot of the … Continue reading
UMW Blogs loves Akismet
After reading this post by D’Arcy about how easy and free it is to get Akismet up and running for WordPress Multi-User, I finally decided to take the plunge and replace the developmentally languishing Spam Karma 2 with Akismet–I’ll miss … Continue reading →
